Howdy podnerz, Just blew back into town after nearly a week in class at Treasure Valley Community College (TVCC) attending S-390 Intro to fire behavior calculations. Let me tell y'all, it's a helluva lot warmer down there in Ontario, OR than it is here in the hills. I'm talkin' 50 degrees and SUNNY! Anyhoo, the class was great; got to learn a lot about different ways of figgerin' out what a wildfire might do using nomograms, fireline handbook appendix B, and the computer program BEHAVEplus. Good shit to know for the fire nerd in all of us. Might rain this weekend, meaning them steelhead might move up the the river, and I got my transition strips from home depot along with my base trim stix to pretty up the dwelling (I'll post some pics when it's done). Hope all is well on yer driveway of the information dirt road! More to come.......

Thanks y'all for the cordial homecoming, although the fish in the pic is not a salmon in fact but a steelhead. This particular critter was a native female (note the adipose fin intact behind the dorsal) south fork clearwater river b-run. On the clearwater river there are two types of steelhead, A-run and B-run. A-run fish are generally smaller than b-run and are not looking to spawn in the cleawater but the snake or salmon rivers. During the fall, the water in the snake is still pretty warm so the A-run fish swim up the cooler water of the Clearwater until the snake cools down. It can be pretty fun because you get two chances to catch 'em, when they swim up and when they swim down. The B-run fish are much larger, up to 25 lbs or so, and are bound for the south fork clearwater, selway, and lochsa rivers. Idaho is also the only inland state with steelhead runs. Now you know.

Hey there everybody, just signed up with the local access wizard and now have dedicated internet to pinky (no more poaching). This winter has been a really good one, although short, and we are almost done with the inside of the house. A few more trim sticks and a little plumbing ought to seal the deal until next winter. Other than that, I've got in some really good skiing with a few backcountry trips up to lick creek lookout, sargeant's peak, big creek, and elk summit. Also, quite a few steelies have been pulled out of the river by the bandit and his fly rod on both the salmon and clearwater rivers and a nice one out of the wenatchee in november. Going back to the green machine here in a few days and am looking forward to getting back on the payroll. Anyhoo, here's a few pics (I'll post more later) from the previous winter.

Hey everyone,
The bandit has returned from his duties in southern California fightin' them pesky wildfires and is back home safe and sound in the Meadow. He and She B have began work on pinky this weekend with hardwood floor install the main objective. Got about one room done so far, but the goin is slow being as though neither one of us has ever installed hardwood before. Next step will be the new kitchen layout, in which the jury is still out as to what that will end up as. Any way, keep an eye one the blog, and I'll try to post a little more frequently. TA-Ta

Other than that, steelheading on the salmon river has been good, with two fish landed on the fly fod, here's a pic of the hatchery fish I decided to bonk and eat.

The snow has returned and with it so has the Bandit! That's right, all the fires are out and the Bandit can now have clean underwear and some sort of a life again. A little update: The Bandit has recieved permanent employment with the USFS as an assistant engine forman. El Bandito and the she-bandito have bought a house here in New Meadows, Id ( for more info contact the blogfather ). Steelhead are moving up the salmon river. Snow is coming very soon. Life is good. Missing my family. Any way, probably wont be posting too much in the coming months, but I'll try as best I can. Take care, and check back soon!

Mic,
Step 1. Find yerself a nice stick as long as yer arm from palm to shoulder.

Step 2. Hold said stick vertical with arm extended.

Step 3. Look down arm toward tree on level ground and sight over thumb knuckle to breast-height on stump (or where you'll make your cut).

Step 4. Move forward or backward till top of stick aligns with top of tree. You have now created a 45 degree angle. Give or take a few more feet to compensate for slope, but this is where the top of the tree should end up once felled.

Step 5. Fire up the gas-powered timber sword and give that fiberous fucker hell!

Step 6. Buck up, haul away, and grab a cold one!

Howdy y'all! Sorry about the lack of posts this past week, it's just..well...just...uuhhh..just that I haven't felt like putting much up on the blog. Not that any thing cool hasn't happened, or that I haven't had the time, I just haven't done it. Sorry. Anyhoo, been fishin' quite a bit at the lake across the road from the pad, caught a few nice cutthroat, brookies, and rainbows and suffered a bit of mild frostbite on my toes the first day in the float tube. Since then I've only been fishing out of my canoe which is no easy task no matter what you might see in pictures. Factors such as wind, casting direction, and just flat out getting the damn thing to sit still all play a part in the dance we know as trout fishing. The she-bandit has been gone for three weeks and I patiently await her arrival home this coming sunday. Don't get me wrong, a dude likes his time to himself, but she's become a pretty big part of my day to day and I'm not ashamed to admit I miss her. The end of march marks another move for the bandit back down to Mccall, ID to begin work on the ninth of april. At which point the bandit will no longer have internet access and will suspend posting until the fall. I still got a few more posts left in me, though! So, until then, here is a pic of the she bandit doin' her thing on a controlled burn outside of Meacham, OR. in the fall of '05.

Here's one that definately deserves two old-growths up. It's one of those flicks that even though I've seen it probably twenty times, it never gets old. If you haven't seen this movie then where in the HELL have you been? As you can tell, since the she-bandit is in Florida for the burn academy the bandit has had ample time to catch up on movies. As of now until the end of the month, the bandit will be your personal movie reviewer. I will rate the movies not unlike that of Ebert and Roeper, except instead of thumbs I will use trees. That's right, trees. Two trees up, two trees down. One tree up, one tree down. As for tonight's movie presentation "Monster", I give it two old-growths up. For christ's sake, watch this movie, even if you didn't watch Borat.

Fish camp champion 2007

That's right fellow bloggers, the bandit swept the 2007 fish camp with a whopper 10.7 pound rainbow trout. Let me tell ya, he was one big bastard! He hit a black rooster tail in crystal lake (located in the quincy wildlife area just east of wenatchee) right around noon on the first day of fish camp. So what does the champion recieve for his outstanding prowess as a trout hunter? Well, he gets one custom made trophy to take home, and onther trophy to keep until next year when it MUST be brought back to be competed for once more. Oh yeah, and the cash. Each participant must pay twenty bucks to compete for the trophy, and this year about twenty dudes went after the whopper. My buddy Gavin was the runner up with another rainbow weighing in at 6.10 pounds. Definately a year for quality over quantity as not many fish were caught. So the Eastside Walters take the trophy back to it's rightful home until next year when those damn westsiders can try again. Enjoy the pics!

Holy shit, blogland! What a long strange trip it's been. So here's how it all went down: Last monday the she-B and I decided to go down and visit some friends down in Mccall, ID. As soon as we got down there the skies opened up and it started DUMPING snow. Teusday morning we awoke to 6 fresh inches and by the end of the day we had an even 10 inches. After a dinner at the pub, a soak in Rick's hot tub, and a good nights rest we awoke wednesday to another 8 inches of snow and snowing hard! Thank's to Brundage Mt. resort's relaxed lift ticket checking practices, we rode those 2 days of fresh pow absolutely free! Thursday morning is where it really gets killer (by the way, it hasn't stopped snowing!). Some firefighter buddies of mine in Mccall have a backcountry yurt out in the Frank church wilderness complete with an approach snowmobile, cut wood, and all the ammenities. All the she-B and I had to do was provide the food and booze. So, after a 13 mile snowmobile ride into the yurt, we settled in for two days of AMAZING backcountry skiing in snow so deep it was damn near over your head! We also got in a soak out at Burgdorff hot springs. Saturday afternoon we headed back down the trail into Mccall and back into Ricky's hot tub. The next day (still snowing, hard, never stopped), we went down to Tamarack resort for 7 inches of untouched powder and the US snowboard grand prix national championships, all complete with 2 dollar micro-brews! With sore legs and great big smiles all around, we decided to head back to Sandpoint today. I mean, after all, fishing season opens up this thursday! Long story short, we went down for 2 days and ended up staying for 7 days of the best skiing of the year. Big thanks to Rick and Kat for their selfless generosity!

The she-bandit and I have returned from North Central Washington. Had a great time at the wedding and my Bro's birthday par-tay. Celebrated his B-day at Joe's log cabin in the 'snatch with lotsa free drinks and some good games of pool. Don't worry Blogfather, nobody barfed and brother spent the night at our hotel across the street. As promised, here are some pics of the fish and one of the Bandit on a backcountry ski trip last week. Enjoy.

Spent the last two days fishing the Clark Fork river downstream from the Cabinet Gorge Dam. Wouldn't exactly say I knocked 'em dead but I did manage a couple of fish. The first day I caught none, but the she-bandit caught a nice brown. We cooked up some mac and cheese over an open fire for lunch and washed it down with a chilly cup of chardonnay. Day two was spent by myself as it was raining like a sumbitch. I caught one rainbow, one cutthroat, and one mackinaw (lake trout). All fish mentioned in this blog were caught on spoons (I gave up on the fly rod after day one!). I will post the pic of the cutthroat and the brown tomorrow as my camera is out in my truck and I'm currently in my 'jammies. For now, here are a couple pics off the web of the specimens we captured. Headin' west here in a few days for a friends wedding and am hoping to throw some flys at rocky ford creek. Stay tuned to see if I catch something.

Hello blogland, It's been a while but it's glad to be back with y'all. As some may know I just returned from a trip down to the shack to spend some time with the blogfather and ol' malihini. We had a hell of time as documented on the blogfather's address but as all things in life it just seemed too short. Needless to say I can't wait to ride south again. Back here in the north there has been no new snow, however some is predicted for later in the week. I leave you now with requested images of hole in the rock. Hole in the rock is in the escalante-grand staircase national monument in southern Utah and was carved out of solid rock so the mormon pioneers could get across the colorado river. Let me tell ya, it is a long way down to the water which is higher now due to the glen canyon dam. enjoy.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while but I've been too busy skiing. Went up on friday and spent the night in the laidoffabago and rode amazing powder all day long. Watched the playoffs on sunday and then went cross-country skiing the rest of the day and evening. Hiked up to the top of blue mountain (el. 6970) today for some killer riding. The rutsch block showed no significant avalanche danger so we tore the hell outta that hill. Provided is a pic of the she-bandit at the the summit.

Took the pics of the turkeys yesterday and the deer today. Both are regulars to the yard and there is a nice buck that shows up to check on his ladies from time to time. Saw a mother moose and a calf this last fall but they haven't been around since. Other critters include lotsa coyotes, little white rabbits, badgers, elk, and a bald eagle that lives down by the pond but my camera ain't good enough to take a decent pic without spookin' him.

Good mornin' y'all! Another weekend is upon us and we all know what that means: PLAYOFF GAMES!! That's right; football, beer, fritos, cheese dip, couches, underware, cussing, covering your hand with your face in agony as the bears kick the seahawks ass (hopefully not!), and a lot of exercise on monday to pay for it all. It's another cold ass morning here in the greatest state in the union but I did manage to get out and go for a hike yesterday. George the dog and I hiked up to the top of the hill behind the house and caught the sunset. I've included some photos for your viewing pleasure. Both photos were taken at about 5500 feet around 4 pm with a mind numbing temp of around 10 degrees. Later that evening the she bandit watched another episode (HBO rented miniseries from netflix) of Big Love. This is a very cool show based in Salt Lake city about polygamy. It's fictional but has a great cast and story starring Bill Paxton and a bunch of women. I recommend it. Watch it. Now.

Good evening blogholios, the Bandits have arrived back in Idaho to a nice clean house free of small children, noise, shitty showerheads, and chihuahuas. The memorial for Dries went off without a hitch with great attendance, discounted beers, and a wonderful toast. Carol and TJ (Dreis' parents) showed up and were very happy to see all of Nick's friends in one spot to celebrate his life. The she-B and I took off the next day and arrived back home around sixish. I leave you now with a little brain candy.

Guess who does NOT have a hangover this morning! The Bandit, that's who! Spent New Years in Eugene, OR with the family of The She-Bandit's best friend (let's just call her child-producer). We had a lovely dinner at the Steelhead Brewing Company in downtown Eugene where the Bandit had one hell of a Magherita pizza and 2 bohemian-style pilsner beers. From there we went somewhere with a ton of kids no taller than my knee who were very loud and just as many chihuahuas who were all nearly as loud as the kids. For the final countdown we lit off illegal fireworks in the back forty of some genuine urban sprawl. All in all a very happy healthy new years eve. The bandit is positive there are NO children or chihuahuas in his forseeable future. However, speaking of the wee-ones, a certain someone back in the Wenatchee valley (We'll call him Garvin) is expecting another child. So, today the B-he and B-she head north to seattle for an evening with some friends residing there and hopefully some fresh sushi and dark redhook beers. From there it's over Stevens pass for some skiing and then a remeberance party in Leavenworth on the 3rd for the life of Nicholas O. Dreis, who died on New year's eve in 2005 in a vehicle rollover. Alas, the bandit must ride, but he leaves you with a few images from Lincoln city, ande wishes of a healthy and prosperous 2007! Hi Ho silver, Away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today I recieved one hell of a gift from the she-bandit. A seven-piece, 18 volt ryobi tool set complete with drill motor, sawzall, orbital sander, skilsaw, jigsaw, wet-dry handheld vac, 180-degree flashlight, 2 batts, charger, and cordura carrying case. I am the luckiest man alive.

It's snowing very hard today up here in the north country and we're both to sore to ski being as we skied six days in a row this last week. However, later in the day we're a gonna do a little cross-country skiing around round lake near the house. Our friends Rick and Katherine left us yesterday evening after a two day visit and they are currently on their way to Snoqualmie Pass for some more skiing and then onward to Seattle to catch a Seahawks game on Christmas eve. It certainly was enjoyable to entertain; we drank delicious wine and the she-bandit cooked up some portabello mushroom burgers complimented with a salad made by yours truly and a fresh loaf of french bread. We all finished off the meal with some special chocolate chip cookies made by Rick which had a peculiar green hue to them (which all made us feel kinda funny afterwards, if you know what I mean!). I hope everyone is having an enjoyable holiday season (or had one, in the case of my dad) and are enjoying giving just a little more than recieving. I've provided a picture of a particular christmas ablum that really completes the holidays for me personally. I don't own the album but I do have a couple of tunes from it on the computer. So, grab yourself some egg-nog and brandy, put on some yuletide tunes of your liking, and have yourself a merry little christmas!

Seems as if some of the non-beta bloggers are having trouble viewing my posts. I'm pretty new to this ball game so any info on the problem will be greatly appreciated. Although, I have not yet consulted the blogfather on this issue, so perhaps the answer to my problem is just a cellular transmission away. Not much taking place here in the greatest state in the union; no new snow, lotsa sunshine, christmas tree is up and decorated with presents underneath, and the she-bandit has returned. Upcoming events include a trip to columbia falls, mt. to pick up a pick-up for the she-bandit's father (and do a little skiing along the way), a few friends from Mccall and one from Leavenworth coming to visit later this week, and a four-day trip to lincoln city on the oregon coast between christmas and new years. Currently I am sitting here in my underpants after a day of skiing, drinking a pepsi, and bloggin' my frickin' brains out. The she-bandit is cooking a pot roast in the crock pot with potatoes, turnips, onion, and a shit-ton of garlic for the evening's rations. We just finished up a made-for-tv digital video disc last night entitled: Into the West. I'll tell ya, the sonofabitch is twelve hours long, but is one of the best movies I have watched in a long time. If you liked Dances With Wolves, Legends of the Fall, Jeremiah Johnson, or any kind of movie that has to do with cowboys and indians, I would strongly recommend this (these) movie. You can watch it over the holidays to make yourself feel pretty damn thankful for what ya got. Rent it. Now. So, my computer comrades, it is time for the bandit to ride away, but fear not for his return might just surprise you. Merry christmas to all and to all a good night!

The bandit has just returned from a trip out west to the wenatchee valley. The bandit got a little bored out here in idaho due to no new snow, crappy weather, lack of the she-bandit, and overall wanderlust. So here's how the story goes: Left here on wednesday morn, and took the mighty interstate 90 to moses lake. From there, headed north on highway 17 (or as I like to call it, the fish highway), up to rocky ford creek for a little fishing. Fishing was slow, but the weather was gorgeous. hung out there for the afternoon until the sun went down and proceeded west to wenatchee. Had s couple cold ones at my buddy's ski shop and linked up with a few more old fire buddies for dinner, pool, and rock and roll at joe's log cabin down on the ave. Later that evening my friend becca showed up and being as though she wasn't in the mood to party, gave me a ride back to my pickup (the laidoffabago) for the remainder of the evening. The next day was spent fishing on the wenatchee where the bandit caught four beautiful trout and three mountain whitefish. Very healthy looking specimens. Around four in the afternoon I linked up with my lesbian friend in Leavenworth and we headed up to stevens pass for opening day of night skiing. During skiing we rand into the famous dan zimmerman and hung out till midnight after which we drove back to leavenworth and called it a day. Woke up the next day and drove to mission ridge for a little more skiing with a few friends and had a wonderful afternoon skiing above the famous wenatchee valley inversion layer. Spent the evening with my friend Tom at the clearwater saloon in East wenatch and spent the night on his most uncomfortable couch. Took off back east the next day over highway 2 and got back home around six. All in all a very cool trip. Got to see some good friends, great skiing, good food, and great fishing. The she-bandit comes home tomorrow and life returnes to normal. Hope all is well out there in blog-land, and I'll try to start posting more pics when the she-bandit gets back with my camera. Peace

Just finished up some delicious elk burger tacos washed down with a cold Rainier 16 oz.. Sittin' here ponderin' a pressin' question: Is Katie Couric cuttin' it as a national news anchor? I mean really, I'm used to seein' her all smiley and such on Good Morning America and now I'm not sure if I like what I see. I guess she's doing as good a job as anyone, and it has nothing to do with her being a woman, but I feel Judge Judy would be more of a suitable choice. If I'm gonna be watchin' the world news, with all the death, corruption, starvation, war, and all kinds of other bad shit, I wanna be listenin' to some old dude with quivering jowels, grey hair, and a look on his face like he couldn't smile if he wanted to (Joe Simoni). Maybe that's the pitch, though; the cute, hidden smile of Katie in the face of negative news. Who knows? not the bandit. Let him know how you feel in the comment section.

Bein' as the she-bandit has possesion of my camera for the next two weeks (I left it on her horse) , I don't have any photos to share with y'all. So, bein' as this is a web-log(blog), I shall log the days events: Got up around 6 a.m., had a delicious breakfast of total cereal with soy milk, banana, and psyllium husk (the bandit loves his fiber (nor is the bandit gay)), brewed a pot of coffee, drove to the hill, skied for four hours, drank a red bull energy drink, went to the gym for two hours, got razors and eggs at safeway, drove home, did laundry, cleaned house, watched oprah, made dinner (cous-cous w/elk steak and two pale ales (probably more before the day's end), shaved the head, showered, and am now currently blogging. A typical day in the absence of the she-bandit. So it is, and so it may be tomorrow. Take care.

The bandit really appreciates the feedback on his initial posting. He is currently thinking up new themes and schemes to share with y'all and might appreciate some links and such to get pictures and the like. For today, however, the bandit believes he'll share some photo's of the bandit's better half to give a little more insight into the complex (yet simple) personality of the bandit. We'll refer to her as the she-bandit and she's been with the bandit a little over two and a half years. Thanks again!

The bandit rides a little diffrent........ While most of the other cowboys value things like right and wrong, love and hate, life and death, etc., he rides with fire and ice (although from time to time he does find himself confronted with the foresaid). But most of the time, half the year he's fire, the other half ice. Such is his personality, musical taste, relationships, ativities, monetary alottments, and the like.
